‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.
If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate
and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that
flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a
shocked Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who
remain in Gaza if he died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with 1,
026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of
either opportunity or a moment of doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar
instructed people holding hostages that, should he be
killed, they should kill their hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained
in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to
their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday
that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a
deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the

backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome –
albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze
of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom
is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud
soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better
than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily,
glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of
such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we
would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline,
raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under
£150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t.
Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

Feb 8 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday missed estimates for fourth quarter profit and forecasts for 2024, with slowing
sales of its flagship heated tobacco product IQOS in particular concerning analysts.
The Marlboro cigarette maker has so far led a transition among tobacco giants towards smoking alternatives,
with IQOS at the core of that effort, consuming the vast
majority of over $10 billion PMI has poured into its
transformation since 2008.
It said on Thursday that shipments of heated tobacco units grew
by 6.1% in the fourth quarter, compared with 18% growth in the third quarter.
Philip Morris added that it expected a further hit to shipments over the coming year as a result of a ban on flavoured heated tobacco in the
European Union.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said however IQOS had
now surpassed Marlboro in terms of net revenues.
“We are entering 2024 with strong momentum,” he said in a statement.
Any sustained slowdown in IQOS sales was a problem for Philip Morris given its significance for the business
and the company’s premium relative to peers, analysts said.
But Mark Giambrone, a portfolio manager at Barrow Hanley,
a sub-adviser to American Beacon’s Large Cap Value Fund which invests in PMI,
was not too concerned.
IQOS is set to test launch in the United States, the world’s largest market for
smoking alternatives, this year with a full roll-out later.
“When that happens it will be a boon for the stock and for their earnings base,” Giambrone said.
The company’s shares fell 3%, but recovered to stand around 1.6%
lower by 11:20 a.m. ET (1620 GMT).
PMI reported fourth-quarter adjusted profit of $1.36 per share.
Analysts had on average had expected a profit of $1.45.
It expects adjusted annual profit of between $6.32 and $6.44
per share, while analysts were expecting $6.60 per share, LSEG data

Aug 22 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Altria Group said on Tuesday that its subsidiary e-cigarette firm NJOY has
filed a complaint against rival Juul Labs with the U.S.
International Trade Commission, seeking a ban on the import and
sale of Juul products.
The move escalates a dispute between the two e-cigarette makers after Juul filed
a similar patent infringement case against NJOY at the ITC in June.
Altria once held a 35% stake in Juul, which it purchased for $12.8 billion in 2018.
Altria exited the agreement earlier this year, just days before announcing a purchase of NJOY
Holdings for about $2.75 billion.
NJOY said in its filings that Juul products infringe
two of its patents, and that it intends to obtain a ban on products including its currently marketed Juul device and Juul pods.
NJOY also sued Juul in Delaware on Tuesday for infringing the same patents, seeking
an unspecified amount of damages.
Juul filed its own patent lawsuits against NJOY and Altria at the ITC and in Arizona federal
court in June, seeking money damages and a ban on imports of NJOY’s Ace
vapor device.
Juul said in a statement on Tuesday that it stands behind its intellectual property and will continue to
pursue its infringement claims.

Reynolds in North Carolina federal court last year after a jury

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its heated tobacco device,
IQOS, in the U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for the heated tobacco business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the
day.
The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and
expand its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes
amid stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.
The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to
regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past regulatory
decisions, Reuters reported last week.
The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by the
second half of 2025.
A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year,
with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.
This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth
in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and
16% expected earlier.
However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and profit
forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as higher cigarette

Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023,
as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose,
Sky News reported on Wednesday.

An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner, three deputy commissioners
and CEO are members of the Chairman’s lounge.
‘This does not impact the integrity of the Commission,’
the spokesman said.
‘Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations in regards to
Chairman’s lounge membership in the NACC Gifts and Benefits
register.
‘Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission’s jurisdiction.’
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley have said the Prime Minister
should refer himself to the NACC over 22 upgrades and extra Chairman’s
Lounge memberships received from Qantas.
An insight into the type of service offered by the Chairman’s Lounges was offered by a job ad posted on employment site Indeed
for the one at Canberra Airport.
The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that Qantas contracts to run the lounges,
stated they were seeking ‘a highly motivated Food & Beverage Attendant to join our experienced and professional Front of House team’.
‘This role is based within the Chairman’s Lounge,
a small fine dining restaurant and lounge area that offers an a la carte menu designed
by Neil Perry Consulting,’ the ad states.
‘Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and
efficient food and beverage offerings that meets our passengers’ expectations.’

high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability
to work a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy
when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting
them from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only
the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were
‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles
and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did
as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of
their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against
proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money
wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates
to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any
party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who
makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and
the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures
of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which
donations get made – but you only find out the details of who
has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are
won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into
campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not
stop the rot’

‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the
opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these
important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward
by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes
à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions
of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency
rules to take effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of
quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor
and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want
to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include
hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes
only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the
Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws
implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is
being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that
could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being
in politics to ‘clean things up’.
